My Friend

by Danny Crafton

My friend Jack came to me,
As a puppy one fine day,
With puppy eyes and puppy love,
Saying take me home today!

Standing up in his Kennel,
So happy to see me there,
I couldn’t resist, Tho I tried so hard,
Jack came home to stay with me there.

A retired Cop, and Vietnam too,
I was callused and hard and numb.
To let such a thing as a puppy touch my heart,
Seemed a little dumb.

I have seen death and destruction,
A dozen life times to fill.
And now this cute Pyr puppy
Wants to share my life still.

"I don’t represent death, Pop-
for lives is what I save.
For I’m a Livestock Guardian,
I have to stand and be brave."

"For Sheep are God’s creatures,
And he sent me to keep them safe.
To help make you smile again,
To slow life’s busy pace"

Well Jack has done all these things,
The Sheep are safe, and I am too.
Tho there are some things in the house,
I wish he wouldn’t chew.

He is almost fully-grown,
A proud, majestic LGD.
As powerful as a bullet
And gentle as a breeze.

I thought I’d write you this letter Jack,
To say your Daddy loves you so,
And how very proud I am,
To have you in our fold.
